Empty Amsterdam offices given new life as homes and hotels

More than 2000 homes have been created from former office spaces in Amsterdam in the last year under a scheme to keep empty buildings in use.

The city council said 350,000 square metres of floor space had been converted into 16 hotels and around 2100 residences since the scheme began in 2006.

The recession has left around 18 per cent of commercial property standing empty in Amsterdam and in some neighbourhoods the figure is as high as 50 per cent.
